My wife and I moved to Churchill in 2012 after many years living in the Midlands. I had long been a semi-keen gardener but work consistently got in the way of my doing what I wanted to do. The 1/3 acre Churchill garden was mature and horribly overgrown when we took it on, but we did get it to a condition good enough to open for the NGS in 2016 and 2017. This was as part of a group of 3 gardens, but the group then sadly fell apart due to bereavement and people moving away.
We didn’t have the courage to open on our own in subsequent years, but my retirement in 2021 allowed me to devote much more time to the garden, and we planned to open for the NGS on 20 and 21 June 2026
I am now an active member of the Somerset and Bristol NGS volunteer team, being responsible for production of the booklet and for looking after several local NGS gardens. It is a fantastic organisation to be involved with, and we are always looking for volunteers, in a variety of roles.
