Bibliography-

Professor Timothy Mowl studied for his doctorate at St John’s College, Oxford and joined the University of Bristol in 1992. He first taught art and architectural history in the Department of History of Art at Bristol, and in 2005 he moved to the Department of Archaeology & Anthropology, setting up the Institute for Garden and Landscape History in the following year. He is now Emeritus Professor of History of Architecture and Designed Landscapes at Bristol. From 2003 to 2007 he served as a Member of Council of the Garden History Society, chairing its Education and Publications Committee. He has written over 30 books on architectural and garden history, biography, conservation and planning. His Gentlemen & Players: Gardeners of the English Landscape, charting the influence of aristocrats and professionals on the creation of landscape parks and gardens, was published in 2000. Subsequently, he embarked, aided by former doctoral students acting as researchers and co-authors, upon a Leverhulme-Trust funded nationwide series of the historic landscapes and gardens of England. This began in 2002 with the Historic Gardens of Gloucestershire and culminated, 14 books later, in 2015 with Hampshire.
