Stephen Anderton, formerly a head gardener and National Gardens Manager for English Heritage, has been writing on gardens in the Times for over thirty years, and has lectured in America, Australia, South Africa and Japan. His books include Lives of the Great Gardeners and Christopher Lloyd, His Life at Great Dixter. His own remarkable garden is near Abergavenny, high in the Black Mountains.
